Volunteer Income Tax Assistance available this Saturday

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013 | Posted by | no responses

This free event will be held Saturday, Feb. 23 from 10 to 3 p.m. on the third floor of the Sonoma State University library. The program is sponsored by the Accounting Forum which is a student run club on the SSU campus. The Accounting Forum is a club for those who are considering accounting as a career.

There will be approximately 40 students volunteering their time to assist the public with tax returns this year. All of them have passed the VITA online test from the IRS. In addition there will be numerous CPA’s on hand to review returns. This is a first come, first serve event.

VITA or the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is geared towards helping complete tax returns for low-income families within the community. The program is sponsored by the IRS. Volunteers certified by the IRS provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing.

For those interested in this free service, you need to have an adjusted gross income of less than $50,000, provide an original social security card, identification, and bring tax forms and relevant information.

Last year, the program helped 35 people within the community with an adjusted gross income of $50,000 or less. This is the fourth year that SSU students have participated.

Sonoma State University is located at 1801 East Cotati Avenue.
