Wilfred Ave. underpass open

A long-planned passage linking east and west Rohnert Park beneath Highway 101 opened Friday. The change is “going to be huge” for those who have had to negotiate a circuitous route involving Commerce Boulevard, said Deputy City Engineer Patrick Barnes.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for 3 p.m. Friday at the Roberts Lake Park and Ride lot. It will mark the completion of project envisioned for at least 40 years, Barnes said.
The connector will open to traffic immediately — “once the City Council gets out of the way,” he said.
For about a month, timed traffic lights will manage traffic flow. Sensors to fine-tune that movement will be in place in about a month, he said.
The undercrossing is part of a $46 million Caltrans project that includes widening Highway 101 to add northbound and southbound lanes and adding new on- and off-ramps at Wilfred Avenue.
