A Penngrove resident has stepped in to replace a flag that was stolen from Cotati’s downtown flagpole this week.
“I think within a week we’ll have that flag back up,” said Leland Fishman, whose Petaluma business, Fishman Supply, has been a city
supplier for 25 years.
Fishman has been down this route before. Last September, when the flag’s two-year absence from the 66-foot flagpole became a point of controversy for City Hall critics, he footed the bill to get one raised.
He ordered another one, plus the halyard to raise and lower it, on Tuesday.
He said he would pay for the flag and halyard while the city works out how he would be reimbursed.
“We went through so much to get that last one done that I wasn’t going to let any grass grow,” he said.
One plan, he said, is to raise the cleat that secures the halyard ropes, so that it would be more difficult for vandals to reach.
